The Chief of Police is appointed by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The Office of the Chief of Police carries out the general supervision of the department using an executive staff that consists of two Assistant Chiefs, and a civilian Administrative Assistant.

Departmental operational divisions, under the command of Assistant Chief Jeff Abeln, are committed to ensuring the safety and peaceful enjoyment of all residents and visitors to Collierville, and developing strong teams to deliver the highest level of police service. They consist of Uniform Patrol and Criminal Investigations. The Department's administration components, under the command of Assistant Chief David Tillner, consist of the support elements of the Police Department such as Support Services, Community Services and Accreditation management. They are committed to providing a high level of specialized police services in support of overall operations of the Police Department.

In 1995 the Collierville Police Department attained National Law Enforcement Accreditation. This is the level of professionalism obtained by meeting exceptionally high standards set on a national level. Accreditation has allowed the Collierville Police Department to be one of only a few Police departments across the country to attain this honor. In 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2009, the department achieved re-accreditation.

The Collierville Police Department is unique, in that Chief Larry Goodwin and six of its officers are graduates of the F.B.I. National Academy, considered the "West Point of Police Science".
