Collierville Police Announce New Crime Mapping Program
The Collierville Police Department recently instituted an exciting new feature to their re-designed web site. Crime maps are made available to the public which show generalized locations of offenses and the types of crimes reported. Assistant Chief Jeff Abeln, who pushed for the completion of the project, stated, “We continually receive requests for information about crimes in particular areas. This is the most efficient method for delivering crime information to the community.” While most crimes will be represented on the site, the mapping software used will not publish every incident to the web. “There are some crimes which, by their very nature, are simply too sensitive to publicize. The department and the community realize that publishing certain crimes can significantly hamper our efforts to apprehend an offender,” said Captain David Tillner of the Criminal Investigation Division. The crime map also has the ability to view registered sexual offenders who live in or near Collierville. Chief Larry Goodwin is fond of the new program. “This is another level of transparency that helps strengthen our partnership with the community,” he said. The crime maps are available on the department’s new web site at www.colliervillepolice.org, or at www.crimereports.com.
